How to Have Healthy Teeth for Life

There are numerous reasons why you should look after your dental health, not least to maintain a healthy and attractive smile. However, you also need strong teeth and gums for eating and speaking. When someone has poor dental health, they are often in pain and discomfort, and the problem can extend beyond their mouth. Numerous clinical studies have identified links between oral health and serious health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory diseases.

We place enormous emphasis on preventative dental care, working closely with our patients to help them maintain healthy teeth for life. Looking after your teeth and gums can often prevent common dental problems just by following a simple routine.

Brush Twice Daily

Brushing your teeth at least twice daily is vital for healthy teeth and gums. Brush your teeth using a soft toothbrush and use small circular motions to remove dental plaque and food debris effectively. Try to brush your teeth methodically, cleaning one section of your mouth thoroughly before moving on to the next. It should take approximately two minutes to clean your entire mouth. Also, it’s important to change your toothbrush regularly, usually every three months or sooner, if the bristles look worn.

Use Fluoride Toothpaste

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral and is extremely useful in helping to prevent tooth decay. When you use fluoride toothpaste, it helps to harden your tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay-causing bacteria. After brushing your teeth, spit out any excess toothpaste but don’t rinse, as this leaves a thin layer of fluoride ions coating your teeth, providing just that bit extra protection until it is time to brush your teeth again.

Floss Daily

Many people avoid flossing daily, perhaps because they find it uncomfortable or are unsure how to floss properly. However, it is an essential task because flossing removes the plaque and food debris between your teeth and just underneath the gum line, both areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Regular flossing helps reduce your risk of tooth decay and, importantly, helps ensure your gums remain strong and healthy. If you are not sure of how to floss or struggle to use dental floss, please talk to us next time you visit our practice. We can demonstrate how to floss effectively and easily or discuss other tools to try, and we can guarantee to find something that will suit you and be easy to use.
